Continuous Improvement

🧡 “Continuous Improvement is better than delayed perfection” 🧡

Love this quote from Mark Twain, so inline with his overall philosophy about growth and personal development… and definitely reminds me of the adventurous spirit of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn – (note to self, re-read both books in 2025!)

Fast forward to the 21st century, and a mantra from one of the most inspiring female leaders I have worked with is also in the same line of thinking: “Fast is better than perfect”. Don’t get lost in the search for perfection, it can motivate you to perform at high level but it can also slow you down and hinder progress. Also, when we put pressure on ourselves and don’t achieve such perfection, this can impact our self-esteem; fear of failure and our insecurities will return to haunt us.

It’s not about dropping the ball and making mistakes because we don’t care. It is not about not having high standards or not aiming at excellence.

It is about being less perfect in some things so we can concentrate on what really is important: the value and the impact we are bringing to our customers. Presenting that first iteration, that first draft, and gathering the feedback so we can look at ways to improve and make sure we deliver products or services that our customers love. Create that culture where effort and learning are valued as much as the goals achieved, and celebrate those small wins along the way!

Embrace a culture of improvement as opposed to a culture of perfectionism. As a recovering perfectionist, this is a journey I’m on. You?
